Alexandrinenplatz, Bad Doberan, Germany

Alexandrinenplatz has been transformed by a new traffic solution that reduces heavy traffic and gives priority to pedestrians and cyclists. The result is a fitting gateway to the town centre and a tourist attraction in its own right in this Baltic spa town.

A new network of paths, including a pedestrian crossing, now links the open central space to the surrounding classicist palaces and townhouses. The lighting scheme reflects this variety of roles. Street and area lighting luminaires, mounted on shared poles at six metres for the streets and four metres for the walkways, provide standard-compliant lighting for the traffic areas, using lenses for asymmetric side-throw distribution. At the pedestrian crossing, luminaires fitted with lenses—developed by WE-EF specifically for crossings and their waiting areas—ensure safe illumination.

Along one side of the square, the pavement has been widened to eight metres to create a promenade with its own distinct lighting identity. Here, luminaires trace the route with a brilliant band of light points, their PMMA cylinder heads slightly enlarged to also house integrated projectors—combining pathway and architectural lighting within a single luminaire. Projectors mounted on the poles add a subtle wash of façade lighting, picking out selected details.

On the central island, individual spotlights highlight an information board, a monument and a water feature, while islands of light beneath the trees evoke the play of sunlight or moonlight through the canopy.
