Kamp, Bad Doberan, Germany

The Kamp is a triangular park at the heart of Bad Doberan, a former summer resort. Its avenues of trees, some around 200 years old, frame the early 19th-century Red and White Pavilions. After the park was restored and made barrier-free in line with conservation requirements, a new lighting scheme completed the renewal.

The concept treats the Kamp as a festival square that can also become an intimate 'parlour' for lingering into the evening. The lighting is deliberately discreet, keeping the technology in the background so the trees and pavilions remain the defining elements. Only a few luminaires sit within the inner area. At the entrances, pole-mounted spotlights create transition zones that let the eye adjust from bright street lighting to the softer light of the park
